Kia AY Electric SUV

News Highlights

  • Kia AY will also be launched with a petrol engine
  • It will be locally developed at Anantapur facility
  • Kia will launch the all-electric EV6 SUV this year

Kia will introduce an all-new small electric SUV by 2025 in the Indian market. Being codenamed as AY, it will be underpinning a flexible platform so that it can have a petrol twin too. The development work on Kia AY has begun and it would take at least three years before it finally hits the roads in India around 2025. However, the brand is all set to introduce its globally acclaimed EV6 electric SUV in the country this year itself. It will be sold as CBU while setting up the electric infrastructure simultaneously for the all-new SUV in 2025.

Kia's global CEO Ho Sung Song had revealed the company's EV vision last month. It included an annual sales target of 4 million vehicles by 2030 with half of it coming from electrified powertrain while nearly 30 percent was kept aside for pure electric vehicles. Kia will launch 14 all-electric vehicles till 2030 in international markets. The models approved by the top brass at Kia for this year include the small SUV for emerging markets like India while an electric pick-up truck and another model have been greenlighted for developed nations. Kia's contemporaries like Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will also foray into the EV segment around the same time in 2025 in India.

Currently, the EV space in India is single-handedly dominated by Tata Motors with a market share of more than 90 percent. It presently sells electric versions of two of its most popular products - Tigor and Nexon. By the time Kia will launch the small EV in 2025, Tata will probably have half a dozen all-electric cars and SUVs on sale in India. Our friends at ET Auto sent an email to Kia India but it did not elicit any response as of now. Needless to state, India is one of the fastest growing markets for Kia and the local base is expected to outpace the global growth while capturing nearly 10 percent of the brand's global production and 8 percent of the total revenues.
