Hyundai India is all set to launch the new-gen 2020 i20 during the festive season in October-November in the country. The hatchback has already been spotted as a test mule several times on the Indian roads. In fact, the South-Korean automaker has already launched the new-gen 2020 Hyundai i20 in the German market at a starting price of 13,600 Euro which is roughly Rs 12.15 Lakhs. It is also getting a mild-hybrid system for the first time which costs Euro 18,000 which is nearly Rs 16 Lakhs. However, the new-gen 2020 Hyundai i20 price in India will be in range of Rs 5.50-9.50 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom).
The engine and transmission details of the India-spec 2020 Hyundai i20 have been leaked ahead of its official unveiling. Though the tried and trusted 1.2L naturally aspirated MPi petrol, which generates 83bhp and 118Nm, will be continued with the hatchback. The new addition will be in the form of 1.0L turbocharged GDi petrol engine which develops a top power of 98.5bhp and peak torque of 172Nm. We have already seen this engine with several Hyundai cars in India such as Venue, Aura and Verna. Reports are coming in that the company will also offer the mild-hybrid tech with the 1.0L engine which will increase the power output to 118bhp and torque performance to 200Nm. In addition, the mild-hybrid technology will also reduce the Co2 emissions while mileage will get a bump.
The 1.2L petrol engine will be offered with the 6-speed manual gearbox as standard while the 1.0L T-GDi engine will have multiple transmission options in the form of a 6-speed iMT (AMT) and a 7-speed DCT automatic unit. There will also be the 1.2L U2 CRDi diesel engine at the helm as diesel cars are fairly popular in the Indian market. The 2020 new-gen Hyundai i20 was originally scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, Hyundai had to unveil the hatch digitally. It will take on the likes of Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz in the Indian market upon its launch during the festive season of Diwali 2020.
