Currently offered with a 2.0-litre petrol engine; diesel to come later this year.

BMW also launched its all-new 6-series GT or Gran Turismo at the Auto Expo at a price of ₹58.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Initially, it will be available only as a petrol (630i) with a diesel variant joining it towards the second half of 2018.

The new 6-series forms part of BMW’s strategy to counter the long-wheelbase Mercedes E-Class which has been a tremendous success for the latter. The 6-Series has similar length and wheelbase dimensions to the E-Class which means plenty of legroom for rear occupants. Also, in a bid to increase rear occupant comfort even further, the 6-series GT comes with air suspension for a cushier ride quality. The more practical liftback design also liberates huge luggage room compared to a conventional sedan body style.

Like in many recent BMWs the 6-series GT comes loaded with tech. This includes a touch-and-gesture-operated sixth-generation iDrive infotainment system and a head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, LED mood lighting and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with a 10-channel amplifier with an output of 1,400 watts and 16 partially illuminated speakers.

The 6-series GT uses the same petrol engine as the 5-series – a 252hp, 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder motor. A 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel and a 265hp, 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel are expected at a later date. All the engines will come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. Both petrol and diesel models will be locally assembled at BMW’s Chennai facility.
