The Volkswagen emission scandal first came in the news in September 2015 and since then the manufacturer has been paying penalties to the governments of various countries of the world. Recently, the National Green Tribune (NGT) of India slapped a penalty of Rs. 100 crores to the company.
Volkswagen has declared that more than 3.23 lakh vehicles are running with the defective device on the Indian road. The company was also planning to recall the defective vehicles. The official website of Volkswagen India has a Diesel Service Action tab which is supposedly for this recall purpose but till now there is no official word from the company regarding the recall.
The device which was fitted on the vehicles used to work perfectly when the car was in still condition but when tested on the go, it resulted in a few hundred times more than the permissible limit. The penalty of Rs. 100 crores is an interim fee. The officials from NGT along with officials from the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Automotive Research Association of India will calculate the actual in-depth loss of the environment.
