Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is all set to be launched in the next couple of weeks in the Indian market. Being dubbed as the spiritual successor to the Thunderbird 350 range, it is based on an all-new platform and the company has stated that all its upcoming 350cc model would be underpinning this architecture only. The use of a single platform for multiple new models will help Royal Enfield a lot in expanding its portfolio in a relatively quicker span of time while at the same time also keeping the costs in check.

The work on the all-new 350cc motorcycles architecture began after the introduction of Royal Enfield 650 twins (Interceptor & Continental GT). The company intends to develop as many 350cc models using this new platform. Vinod Dasari, CEO, Royal Enfield, in an interaction with folks at carandbike, said: "So, we've learnt how to make many different models within the same modular infrastructure, with the same engine, the same gearbox and the frame. So, in that sense, what was traditionally a company which had very limited powertrains, will now have significant expansion in powertrains." It is being speculated that the next-gen Royal Enfield Classic will also be based on the new 350cc platform. The upcoming 2020 RE Classic has been spotted multiple times during its test runs.

Speaking of the new 350cc platform, it comprises of an all-new 350cc engine, gearbox, double-cradle chassis and frame. The details regarding the engine are kept under wraps currently but it is believed that the company has refrained from using the conventional pushrod architecture of its UCE (Unit Construction Engine). It is expected to make use of the more advanced and upmarket SOHC (Single Over Head Camshaft) setup which will result in better refinement and efficiency. The vibrations will be lesser while performance will accentuate. The transmission could be a 6-speed unit to compliment the overall performance of the new engine. Stay tuned for more updates on the same!
