Triton EV is coming to India, thereby putting an end to all the speculations once and for all. The American manufacturer announced that it has registered a subsidiary in the country under the name of Triton Electric Vehicles India Pvt Ltd. The New Jersey-based Triton Electric Vehicle LLC setting up operation in the Indian market comes in the backdrop of Tesla's entry in India. Setting up a subsidiary in India is the first step of Triton’s ambitious plan for tapping the fast-growing EV segment. India is emerging as a hot market for EV manufacturers with the Indian government announcing a slew of incentives for large-scale adoption of electric vehicles.

Without divulging many details about the quantum of investment or the location for manufacturing, Triton said that the production unit in India would cater to the domestic market as well as neighbouring countries. Not just that, the American EV maker would use the Indian manufacturing unit to export vehicles to emerging markets like the Middle East and African countries. Plus, to undertake such an ambitious plan, Triton plans to hire 21,000 people in India over the coming years. It recently posted a job opening for the embedded design engineer position in Mumbai. They have an R&D unit in Pune and are in negotiations with different state governments to find a place for the proposed manufacturing hub.

Triton EV founder and CEO Himanshu B Patel released a statement on the plans for India. He said "We are considering India entry very critical and important for the company as well as for the entire industry. EV has a very strong future for Indian roads as well as for many parts of the world. The government authorities are also working very seriously in pushing the culture of EVs in India,".

The company's manufacturing facility will not just serve as an assembly line for electric cars, but also produce the necessary EV components. The New Jersey-based electric car maker Triton is partnering with India’s state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to make batteries for the EVs. This would be a further boost to the Indian government's ‘Make In India’ project. Triton plans to modify the vehicles to suit the Indian consumer needs like adding a solar roof to the vehicles. Considering there are huge traffic jams in the country, citizens could charge their EV using the solar panel on the roof. The innovative step could generate up to 1.3 kilowatts per hour which is a significant number. More details are awaited but the EV segment is certainly going to become more competitive with the entry of Triton.
