2021 is just a couple of days away! But can we forget 2020, of course not as this has been probably the most horrendous year for mankind as well as the automotive industry in the recent few decades. The entire world including India was hit severely by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent months of lockdown. The production was suspended for months and dealerships remained shut for several days. Yet, the automakers showed exemplary courage, conviction and perseverance in these testing times while inventing multiple innovative techniques to launch their products in the country. As 2020 is finally coming to an end, we have prepared a list of top 5 value for money cars launched in India this year:

Renault Kwid BS6:

Renault India launched the 2020 Kwid with BS6 engine in January this year, well ahead of the deadline of April 1, 2020. The company marginally hiked the prices of the hatch as compared to the BS4 version. Though, it didn't make any changes to the equipment list, power output and torque performance. Despite upgrading to BS6 compliant engine, Renault Kwid remained to be the most economical and value-for-money product in its segment which comprises of the likes of Maruti S-Presso and Maruti Alto. Renault Kwid BS6 price started at Rs 2.92 Lakhs for the base variant while going as high as Rs 5.01 Lakhs (Both the prices are Ex. Showroom) for the range-topping variant.

Tata Altroz:

Tata Motors did the impossible by introducing the Altroz with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines - a first in the segment and too much ahead of the competition. Being launched in five trim levels namely XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ (O), it was equipped with several premium features such as 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, cruise control, a cooled glovebox, push-button start/stop, auto projector headlamps with LED DRLs, automatic wipers and ambient lighting among many others. The belligerent pricing won the game for Altroz as it started at just Rs 5.29 Lakhs which further consolidated the value-for-money quotient for it in the Indian market.

Hyundai Aura:

Being dubbed as a successor to Hyundai Xcent, it debuted in January this year in the Indian market. The Aura was packed with 12 first-in-segment features at the time of its launch which included wireless charging and driver rearview monitor. Even the company gave a vast choice of three BS6 compliant powertrains to the buyer in the form of a 1.2L petrol, 1.0L petrol and a 1.2L diesel. In addition, an automatic gearbox was available with petrol and diesel engines. However, the most flabbergasting aspect about the all new sedan was its pricing which lied in the bracket of Rs 5.79-9.23 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). The stellar mileage credentials acted as icing on the cake in Aura's success story and made it a true value-for-money product.

Nissan Magnite:

Nissan India exceeded all the expectations and set a new milestone when it launched the Magnite on December 2, 2020 at merely Rs 4.99 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). The Japanese automaker intended to make a mark in the subcompact SUV segment and it rightly did so by pricing the Nissan Magnite well below the entire competition. It wasn't the case that due to relatively lower introductory pricing, Magnite lacked premium features instead it boasted a myriad of segment-leading features in the form of an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic air-conditioning with rear vents, steering mounted controls, cruise control, push-button stop/start, tyre pressure monitoring system, wireless charger, air purifier and ambient mood lighting.

Mahindra Thar:

The Thar has always been considered a 'cult' vehicle in the Indian market. Mahindra & Mahindra, raising the bar to a new high, launched the next-gen Thar on October 2, 2020 in a price range of Rs 9.80-12.95 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). The country's most popular and loved off-roader took a radical departure from the previous-gen model in terms of styling, features and powertrains. For the first time, the side facing rear seats went for a toss in favour of front facing captain seats while several other never-seen-before features made their way in the SUV such as the touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 6-speaker sound system, coloured LCD MID and cruise control. Hence, Mahindra Thar gets a prominent place in our list of Top 5 value-for-money cars launched in 2020.
