News Highlights

  • Maruti and Toyota’s mid-size version of an SUV to be manufactured at the latter's plant from 2022.
  • From 2022, manufacturing of Vitara Brezza will be carried out at Maruti’s Haryana plant.
  • The new mid-size SUV will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Maruti Suzuki India will not be manufacturing its subcompact SUV, Vitara Brezza at Toyota Kirloskar Motors facilities in Bidadi, Karnataka. New reports online suggest that Maruti Suzuki will now allocate another model to be manufactured at Toyota's Bidadi plant. Vitara Brezza will continue to be manufactured at Maruti’s production facility in Haryana.

Talking about this new model, both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are prepping to enter the compact SUV segment. This would be the first instance of a joint development between the two companies. The main reason behind bringing this new mid-size SUV on board is to help the Japanese automakers fill in the respective gaps in their product portfolios. This will also give them a fair chance to compete in the highly lucrative mid-size SUV segment. Also, joint development and production will help to minimize costs.

Furthermore, we can expect the manufacturing of the new model to begin at Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s factory from 2022 in Plant 2 which will be managed by Maruti. Now if you are wondering what exactly this Plant 2 is? For your reference, Toyota’s Bidadi manufacturing setup consists of two units. Plant 1 is responsible for manufacturing Toyota Innova and Fortuner. While Plant 2 is responsible for handling the production of the Toyota Yaris and Camry Hybrid.

Coming back to the new model, the 4.3m-long SUV will be based on Toyota’s DNGA platform. As for the underpinnings, we can expect this joint partnership model to have a common one. The design of the model is likely to be in line with the respective brand’s design language. Under the bonnet, there are chances that the new model might get Suzuki’s 1.5-litre petrol engine. However, a more powerful turbo petrol engine could also be on cards.

Hyundai Creta has been topping the SUV sales charts since its launch earlier this year. Kia Seltos, on the other hand, has also been successful in establishing a firm foothold in the compact SUV segment. Toyota and Suzuki are quite keen to challenge the Korean duo’s dominance with their own mid-size SUV offerings.
