Today it is June 4, 2021 and we are on the eve of World Environment Day. With climate change emerging as a real threat, it is imperative to protect and preserve the environment from vehicular pollution as well. The fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel cause heavy damage to the environment as vehicles powered by these fuels release heavy smoke in the air which pollutes the atmosphere upto a huge extent. Hence, in order to get rid of this, several automakers have come up with all-electric cars for the buyers which release zero smoke from the exhaust pipe and therefore eliminate all the chances of vehicular pollution. The Union government as well as various state government have also rolled out various lucrative subsidies for buyers so that they can switch to electric vehicles from petrol and diesel powered cars. Though, they are not as affordable as the other conventional fuel cars but still the prices have gone down remarkably in the past couple of years. Here we have listed the five cheapest electric cars currently on sale in India:
Mahindra e-Verito
Being originally launched five years back in 2016, Mahindra e-Verito is the cheapest electric car in the Indian market. It is the brand's second electric car after the e2o Plus. Based on the standard Verito, it comes in two variants namely D2 (Rs 9.12 Lakhs) and D6 (Rs 9.46 Lakhs). Both the aforementioned prices are Ex. Showroom, Delhi. The electric sedan is powered by a 21.2 kWh battery which returns a driving range of 181 kms with additional 8 kilometres on the 'Revive' mode during emergency situations. The standard charging time for a full charge is 11 hours and 30 minutes while it can also be fast charged to 80 percent from zilch in just 1 hour and 30 minutes using a DC charger. The maximum power output and highest torque delivery are rated at 41.5 bhp and 91 Nm, respectively.
Tata Tigor EV
Tata Motors ventured into the EV space by launching the Tigor electric in October 2019 in India. Being available in three trims - XE+, XM+ and XT+ - it is priced between Rs 9.58-9.90 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). The sedan is driven by a 21.5 kWh battery which takes 11 hours and 30 minutes to fully charge from zero. Though, it can be fast charged from standstill to 80 percent in merely 2 hours by a DC charger. Tata Tigor EV has an ARAI certified driving range of 213 kms while the top power and peak torque are 40.2 bhp and 105Nm, respectively. The sedan has received 4-star safety rating from the Global NCAP and it carries all the features of the standard Tigor. It is yet to get Tata's revolutionary Ziptronic electric drivetrain.
Tata Nexon EV
Tata Nexon is the most affordable all-electric SUV in India. With price ranging between Rs 13.99-16.56 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi), it is offered in three grades namely XM, XZ+ and XZ+ LUX. Being launched in January this year, it comes with several bells and whistles in the form of Projector headlamps with DRLs, Front fog lamps, Electric sunroof with tilt-function, Fully automatic temperature control with Rear AC vents, 7-inch floating Harman touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Tata Nexon EV draws power from a 30.2 kW IP67 rated battery pack which delivers it a range of 312 kms. The battery can be fully charged in 8 hours and 30 minutes by a regular AC wall socket. However, it will take just an hour to charge it to 80 percent through a DC charger. The top power and max torque are pegged at 129 bhp and 245 Nm. Not to mention, it has received the highest 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP.
MG ZS EV
MG Motors India launched the 2021 MG ZS EV in February this year in two variants: Excite and Exclusive. Priced in a range of Rs 20.99-24.18 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi), it challenges the likes of Hyundai Kona and Tata Nexon. The brand has equipped it with a 44.5 kWh Hi-Tech IP6 rated battery which is connected to an electric motor. The motor dishes out top power of 140 bhp and highest torque of 353 Nm. The SUV has a driving range of 419 kms on a full charge while it also gets three driving modes namely Sport, Normal & Eco. It takes 6-8 hours to charge if done through an AC charger. However, with a 50 kW DC fast charger, the 0-80 percent charge can be achieved in merely 50 minutes.
Hyundai Kona EV
Hyundai Kona Electric was launched in July 2019 at a price point of Rs 23.77 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi) while the dual-tone paint scheme attracts an additional sum of Rs 20,000. Having the charging point in the front grille, it is powered by a 39.2 kWh lithium ion battery. The battery is connected to an electric motor which develops power output of 134 bhp and torque performance of 395 Nm. The normal charging time through an AC charger is 6 hours and 10 minutes while all it takes is 57 minutes to charge upto 80 percent via a DC charger. It offers a driving range of 484 kilometres which is the highest for any electric vehicle in the Indian market. Hyundai will soon the facelifted version of the Kona Electric in India.
